The official groundbreaking for the new Tulsa Drillers ballpark took place today with enthusiastic participants wielding golden shovels.
Hundreds of Tulsans gathered downtown to watch the 2008 Parade of Lights. Sponsored by Public Service Company of Oklahoma, floats, marching bands and other participants meandered through city streets to the delight of the crowds.
Mayor Kathy Taylor today lanched Tulsamillionmiles.com, an interactive website that provides a way to track individual and group fitness goals. The site will help Tulsans track the miles they run, walk, bike or swim.
"Our goal is to reach a million miles as a city," said Taylor. "We are a community who wants to reach and exceed all expectations."
The site will be a one-stop resource for local events, fitness information and a way to tract miles of individual progress compared to the city as a whole and to the Mayor as well. The miles logged on the site will count for each person logged in and for all of Tulsa. "Most importantly, they will count for Tulsa's future health." added the Mayor.
Oklahoma's health statistics are alarming. Almost 30% of Oklahoma's high school students are overweight or obese according to a 2007 study by the Oklahoma Department of Heath. Also, a recent study this year by the Trust for America's Health ranks Oklahoma as the 8th most obese state in the nation.
"We have a hard reality to face--and a choice to make about our future," said Taylor. "We cannot stand by and allow our children to develop habits that will dictate the limits of what they can achieve."
